Mother-in-Law Declares Loud and Clear: Listen Up, You’re Not Getting This Apartment!

Marthas mother-in-laws voice cut through the room like a knife: “Listen here, youre not getting this flat.”
The old woman, louder than any of them, snarled: “You will not have this flat. I dont know how you cared for Grandad, what sort of trick you played to make him sign it over to you, but you wont keep it. And second, youll disappear from my sons life. Hes finally met a proper woman from a good family. So you and your children will vanish. Do you understand?”
For ten years, Id cared for my husbands grandfather while living in a rented flat with our kids. His sister, Emily, lived with the old man too. My mother-in-law never had time for her own husbandthey barely spoke. I never got a degree, never built a career. All my free time went to looking after Grandad and the children.
My husband cheated constantly, his familys drama weighing on him. Other women never stayeda man with kids and no money wasnt worth their time. I forgave him, for the childrens sake. We never bought our own homemost of our income went to rent and Grandads care. When Emily visited, it was only to beg for his pension, complaining about her struggles. Yet somehow, despite it all, they managed holidays abroad and a new car every few years.
Five years ago, Grandad left the flat to me. Hed said, “Youve been more family to me than any of them. My grandson is a traitorhed hand this place to his mother or sister. Let your children have a better life. Consider this payment for your work. So youll never say you wasted your years.”
No one knew about the willthe fewer who knew, the quieter life would be. When Grandads health worsened, the family suddenly cared. They visited, asked after him, even offered to helpfor the first time in years. He wasnt a fool. He knew what they wanted. He smiled through their sudden concern, winking at me when they werent looking.
For the first time, I had freedom. Walking through London aloneno children, no wheelchair to pushwas a luxury. Grandad didnt last long after that. I mourned him deeply. The fight over his estate started almost immediately. His mother and Emily cornered my husband:
“Sign the flat over to Emily. Shes lived here for yearsits her home. Then youll get Mums place later. Just renounce the inheritance. Youll have everything eventually.”
My husband trusted his mothers promises and agreed. I didnt. His mother cared for no one but Emily and her children. It broke my heartten years of care, and now they only wanted what hed left behind.
I respected Grandads wisdom. Hed gone to the solicitor early.
That evening, my husband came home from work and started packing.
“Where are you going?” I asked.
“Im done. Im leaving you and the kids. I only stayed for Grandad. Now that hes gone, thats your problem. I wont pay rent anymore. Theres someone else anyway.” With a mocking wave, he walked out.
Fine. I prepared to move and searched for work. Days later, his entire family stormed inEmily, her husband, their kidsall shouting over each other. His mothers voice rose above the rest:
“Quiet, all of you! You listen herefirst, youre not keeping this flat. I dont know how you tricked Grandad, but well prove it in court. Second, youll stay away from my son. Hes found a decent woman now, and theyre expecting a child. So you and your kids will disappear. Understood? Ill say it again: hand the flat to Emily, and leave my son alone!”
“You know what I understand?” I said. “That I can cut every one of you out of my life.”
I shut the door on their noise. My children and I would be fineI had a job now, a home. Grandad had seen to that. My husband could vanish. Wed be happier without him.
Everything would be all right.
