It all started with a test of Toms fidelity.
So, let me get this straightdid absolutely everyone start flirting with you? Emily asked, arching an eyebrow.
She needed to know who deserved to be dragged out by their hair and who simply needed to be shown the door.
Emily kept her gaze fixed on her husband, showing him just how important the question was. She demanded the same seriousness in his answers.
Youve got some interesting friends, Em! Tom chuckled, shaking his head. Wouldnt wish this on anyone.
Oh? Emily said, genuinely surprised. Whats happened?
You should get them checked for rabies! Tom suggested, grinning. Ive never heard so many double meanings in all my life!
Maybe you should take them to a themed pub or help them sort out their own relationships!
Thats odd, Emily looked genuinely troubled. Theyve always seemed well-mannered to me.
Theyre your friends; you deal with them. Tom put his hands up in surrender. Im not getting involved in your catty business! I value my own hide too much!
But I dont need to be shared around! I know my place, Ive picked my basket, so please, dont confuse me with the others!
Tom, again with these weird comparisons! Emily shook her head.
Honestly, let your friends know not to get any silly ideas! Tom said, his smile vanishing. Its flattering, sure, but thats where it endsand make sure they know it ends there!
So, all of them started flirting with you? Emily repeated.
She needed to figure out who deserved punishment and who was simply out of line.
Emily kept her eyes locked on Tom, showing that she wasnt joking around, and expected equally serious responses.
Well, Sophie was all right about it, Tom mused. She laughed and said itd be nice to have a bloke around the house to hang her shelves and sort the dodgy sockets.
Mm-hmm, Emily noted.
But Lisa, Tom shook his head. She said shes got a new mattress and needs it broken in before its comfortable to sleep on!
And? Emily looked confused.
She said it in such a suggestive tone, my ears turned red! Tom exclaimed. When the rest burst out laughing, I knew I wasnt imagining things!
Well, Lisas always been Thats just her style! Emily nodded knowingly. She works in that adult shop; its just how she talks now!
And Id prefer she kept that style away from me! Tom frowned.
What about the others? Emily asked. Or is it just them?
Right! Tom sat up straight. Dont invite Helen round anymore! Or at least, only when Im out!
That so-called fitness fanatic squeezed my knee so hard. I have no idea what she was trying to show, but Im not a dumbbell!
It honestly hurt!
So, was she trying to flirt, or was it just physical force? Emily asked, suspicious.
I honestly dont want to find out! Tom waved his hands. If it was flirtingno thanks! And if it was physical, it hurt. Didnt like it at all!
And Natalie? Emily pressed on.
Natalie Tom dragged out the name. She said something quietly, but nobody reacted. I think shed had a few too many and was falling asleep.
So, whats got you worked up? Emily grinned. Its not like anything terrible happened!
No need to calm me down! Youre interested in this, arent you? I know how this goes! Tom nodded emphatically. This is where it all startsthen things get messier. Then youll be having a row, and somehow Ill be the one who suffers! You lot will make up, and I lose my family!
Look at you jumping to conclusions! Emily smiled.
Sweetheart, youre the only one for me! Id never, not even by accident, want to lose you! Tom placed a hand over his heart. Im begging you, go sort them out! Id rather wash the dishes here!
You havent said anything about Alice, Emily said suddenly.
Tom froze.
Well, thats not even interesting! Emily thought with a sigh. A classic Freudian slip.
Ahem Tom cleared his throat, voice dropping. Shes your one decent friend!

Trust is an abstract idea. Like all things that stem from it. Theres always more reason not to trust than to entrust yourself to someone else. In the end, we rely solely on peoples decency.
Thats to say, we trust because we want to believe. Its naïve, but society survives on that.
However, as time passes, trust diminishes, as does faith. Life proves that the only person you can truly trust is yourselfand even then, cautiously.
Emily had always trusted herself. She learned young to admit her mistakes and strived to be the best version of herself. In her teenage years, she thought everyone else did the same.
So she forgave friends and acquaintances mistakes, believing they were accidental and surely wanted to make things right.
Thats youthful optimism; it forms the basis of your social circles.
When Emilys first doubts struck, she had plenty of friends and acquaintances. She was already marriedand strangely enough, quite happy.
Her realisation that not everyone can be trusted hit her hard. She was so distressed that she even came down with a fever.
But Tom, her beloved husband, showed his mettle then.
He didnt pry for causes; he simply stayed beside her, helped, and comforted her. And when Emily shared her thoughts, he said calmly:
My dear, thats just life! Not always beautiful, but it isnt only beauty. Just be careful. But youve got me and our family. Let this be our little island of happiness and peace!
Tom convinced Emily there was a world inside their home and a world outside. The outside might be chaos, but inside, they could create the world they wanted.
Emilys life could now be split into two halves: before and after that revelation with Tom. Afterwards, life grew a bit more ordinary.
Emily didnt lose herself or her faith in humanitybut unquestioning trust was gone. She didnt forgive everyone anymore.
Yet her closest friendsand of course, her familyEmily still trusted, as always.
Theyre my inner circle! Theyd never betray me!
There was no reason to doubt.
Years passed
Emily had two children, raised and educated them. Her daughter had married, and her son lived with his girlfriend in a flat.
With the kids grown and gone, life often reminded her of the days before childrenjust her and Tom, together and, of course, with friends!
They could spend time with friends, head off to weekend resorts, visit people, or host guests themselves. With less responsibility, life felt lighter and more joyful.
Its amazing, Emily smiled, well into our forties, and were living like were only just in our twenties!
Oh, no! Natalie replied. Helens the fitness nut! She can jump about all she likes, but my backs not what it was!
And my knees, Sophie added with a wry smile.
And Ive got to put my makeup on, grumbled Alice. Imagine someone seeing Ive got grey hairs!
Exactly! Lisa agreed. Used to roll out of bed ready for anything! Now I wont step outside without my face done. Otherwise, Id scare off all the customers in the shop!
Yes, but its the sense of freedom! Emily said. No one holding you down at home, the whole world out thereand theres still so much we havent seen!
Oh, whats left to see? Tom smirked.
He was the only bloke in their group. Emily alone managed to keep her family together.
But he was always welcome, helping with dinner or showing care for the ladies.
What have you seen, Tom? Alice asked.
All I need is what Ive got. Having more than you need is foolish! Same goes for experienceshow can you appreciate one thing if your minds cluttered with everything? Youll miss whats truly beautiful.
Oh, here we go! Helen laughed. Just poke him and hell wax philosophical!
It was lively, cheerful, carefree. But there was the wisdom of years, memories of hundreds of fleeting acquaintances, each leaving their mark. Thinking changed, and sharpness became second nature.
By chance, Emily realised Tom was lying.
Tom had never liked his job. He called it drudgery. He only endured it for the pay.
He never considered changing, as the salary was excellentbut he didnt want more if it meant more work. No overtime, no weekends, no business trips, always refusing everything. If he managed to sneak off early, hed be as happy as a child.
Now suddenly, he was staying late, working weekends, even going on trips. Same old grumbling, but off he went to work.
Youd think it was for moneybut there was no shortage of cash. And his extra work didnt seem to change the household budget.
This lie pointed to only one thing: Tom had someone else.
Emily wasnt upset about the act of cheating, but about the betrayal itself. Of all people, shed never expected it from her husband!
Theyd had that talk about trust. He was the one who said But now hed changed his mind! Or maybe hed been laying the groundwork for betrayal all along.
Still, Emily wasnt completely cynical yet. Maybe shed imagined it. Maybe Tom was saving up for her.
But if there was someone, it would be from the inner circle. Tom hated meeting new people. He only trusted old friends, tested over years.
With whom? Whos taken the chance? Emily wondered.
She decided to approach it differently. She invited her friends, all of themwithout Tomand asked:
Ladies, weve been together so long, I dont know what to think anymore. I shouldnt have suspicions, but I need to knowwould he fall for it if someone tempted him, or stay true?
Test him in real life! Lisa quipped. On it!
Her friends didnt refuse. And as all gathered, including Tom, Emily watched as they tried to tempt him, with Tom putting up a show of resistance.
That proved hed been warned! But no one could expect what slipped out in the kitchen

So thats why you hooked up with her? Emily asked bluntly.
Watching a man cornered is fascinating. His face contorts with emotion, indignation bubbling up, and you see his mind racing to find the most convincing excuses.
But as funny as it is, its dangerous. The excuses might flop, or sound entirely unconvincing.
He could resort to less civil reactionsand that would be trouble.
Emily didnt wait for words; she simply said:
Go. Ill pack your things for you, then leave them by the door. Take Alice with youI want nothing to do with her now!
You dont want to hear why? he asked, bewildered.
Whats the point? Emily shrugged. No excuse undoes the fact of cheating. Go.
When Tom and Alice disappeared through the door, Emilys friends rushed with questionswhat had happened, what did it mean? Emily didnt answer, asking instead for some space.
I need to think. And pack his things for the last time
Her friends understood, promising to come running if she called.
Her husbands betrayal shattered Emilys view of the world. Like tossing off rose-tinted glassesnow everything looked different.
Well, where do I go from here? she asked herself.
Her trust in othersfriends, acquaintances, even relativeshad been shaken. But she realised it was time to examine those relationships more closely, and thats what she was determined to do.
In the end, Emily learned that trust is preciousearned, not given, and it must be protected. True happiness comes from honesty with yourself and those closest to you. Never let naïve faith blind you; cherish real love, and move forward with open eyes and sturdy heart.
