My Dad Brought Home an Old Box and Said: “Here’s Your Gran’s Ring—You Can Sell It and Buy Yourself a Phone”

Dad popped round to see me today. As we chatted, I mentioned to him that my husbands phone had finally given up the ghost (it barely lasts fifteen or twenty minutes on a charge before dying), so I was looking for a new one for his birthday.

My husbands planning to hand down his old phone to mehe truly needs a reliable one more than I do. Just then, Dad surprised me by producing a dusty old box. He said, This is for you, it belonged to your grandma. You can sell it and get yourself a phone.

Grandma had decided to leave me her ring. Incredibly, the original box was still intact. Inside, alongside the ring, was a receipt, the price tag, even the jewellers seal.

The ring was bought all the way back in 1977. It weighs a little over seven grams.

I honestly think the old gold its made from is far superior to what you get nowadays. The ring itself is quite enormous compared to most rings you see.

I told Dad straight away that I wouldnt dream of selling it. Id much rather wear it myself. Im not one for superstitionssome say you shouldnt wear someone elses jewellery, but Ive never believed any of that.

This ring means so much more to me than its valueits a piece of family history.

Phones seem to break every year or two: bought, then thrown away. But a ring like this? I doubt Id find its equal anywhere.

What would you do with a ring like this?
