Living Together Isn’t Just Sharing a Kitchen and Bathroom: It’s About Respect, Generations, Gratitude—And Why a Family Should Never Be Torn Apart Over Two Eggs, a Quarrel, or a Pie

But living together isnt just about sharing a kitchen and a bathroom. Its about respect. Its realising that an older person has their own needs, routines and, heaven forbid, the right to make a pie. And now here we are, arguing over two eggs. Its not the first time: a frying pan put away in the wrong cupboard, a borrowed saucepan, ingredients Id been saving suddenly missing. I keep quiet, I put up with it. But this time, I just couldnt let it go. Because it isnt really about eggs, the fridge, or even the pie.
Its about thoughtfulness. Theres a sting to having spent a life looking after others, giving, feeding, raising, only to be told Im stingy. Yet Im the one who welcomed them in, never turned them away, never refused. I opened my flat, shared everything, and we make do as best we can. Now, Im being told I should eat separately, keep to myself, and stay out of their way.
I know full well were from different generations. They see things their way, I see them mine. But a family isnt just about whats in the fridge. Or who had what to eat. Its about respect, care, and being thankful. I dont expect anyone to bow and scrape. But it hurts to be called tight-fisted. It really does.
Now I think to myself: I wont get involved anymore. If they eat everything, so be it. If theres nothing left, Ill just make myself some pasta. Eating together? Let them eat alone. But let them know this: its not because Im upset or mean. Its because this is what they wanted. Its their choice. And as for me… Ill remember it. Ill learn from it.
Life sometimes shows you that respect is lost faster than its gained, but that a family shouldnt be divided over eggs or over anything, for that matter.
