There are people who radiate misfortune (as my grandmother used to say)
Ah, let me tell you what my gran would say
There are certain people in this world, you see, who only have to walk into a room for the air to grow heavy. Not because theyre frightening, but because they carry a sort of weight with them. And after they’ve gone, its as if a shadow hangs in the air.
Its not just some old wives talebelieve me, Ive lived long enough to have seen it more times than I care to remember:
When you cross paths with certain folk, trouble always seems to follow.
You meet them, and then suddenly:
something breaks, things go missing, plans fall apart, rows erupt, illnesses loom, bad luck settles over you
And you find yourself wondering:
What on earth is going on? Why cant I ever catch a break?
You know whats the scariest bit?
Very often, all it takes is thinking about that one person, and the answer becomes plain as day.
Intuition never lies.
The heart knows when something is off.
1) The First Reason Jealousy and Hidden Malice
Usually, its envy, my dear.
Someone might grin at you.
They might speak all honeyed words.
But inside, theyre thinking,
I do hope you fall flat on your face! I do hope you fail!
Theyd never say it, of course.
But you feel it radiate from them.
No matter how strong you are, you can sense that undercurrent.
Do you know what happens then?
Your mind grows muddled.
You get tense for no apparent reason.
You lose focus.
You start making slips.
You trip up.
And then you say,
Ever since I talked to that person, my lucks run dry
Thats because jealousy is a poison, dripping quietly.
2) The Second Reason Certain People Carry Their Own Dark Cloud
There are others as well not necessarily wicked at heart.
But theyre endlessly unhappy.
Life is always a struggle for them.
Theyre forever complaining.
Always blaming someone else.
And when they sit down beside you
its like they drain the life out of you.
They start with,
Oh, nothings ever right
Things are bound to get worse
Lifes just misery, isnt it
Before you know it, youve absorbed their gloom.
My gran used to say,
Keep your distance from a moaner, or theyll drag you down too.
Its not magic, its energy.
That kind of negativity spreads like an illness.
Back in the day, people believed in the Evil Eye sticking to such folk.
And then, theyd pass it on to another, loading their troubles onto them with sad stories and complaints.
Gran would warn me,
Dont go carrying other peoples woes. You cant fix them allmore often, youll simply gather them.
3) The Third Reason Some People Are Rotten at Heart
And then, there are those who are, plain and simple not good.
Not angry, just souls who feed on nastiness.
They revel in others stumbles.
They drag down anyone whos made something of themselves.
They spread rumors, speak ill of others.
And its not even about youjust being near that malice leaves a stain.
Theres a saying,
Youre known by the company you keep.
To be honest,
keeping close to a bad sort, running errands for them, listening to their gossip
eventually their shadow falls over you too.
Thats when you find theres a consequence.
Not because God is doling out punishments, but because life itself refuses to let the unclean flourish among the pure.
How can you tell if someone is a warning signor the source of your woes?
Theres a trick to it.
Sometimes, the person isnt bringing you bad luck, but acting as a signpost:
Be careful!
Like a red traffic lightits not the lights fault if you get hit, its trying to stop you from harm.
Sometimes, through one person, life is showing you that:
you dont belong in a certain place
you shouldnt sign a particular contract
you mustnt reveal secrets
youre being too trusting
So, dont rush to blame others straight away.
Be sensible about it.
What should you do if you always seem to be followed by bad luck after meeting someone?
Ill tell you in my grans wordssimply put:
1) Watch for the signs
If after meeting them you:
fall ill
argue at home
make mistakes
bad things keep happening
its not a coincidence.
2) Dont make excuses with but its awkward
People often say,
But theyre family
But theyre my neighbour
But we work together
Listen to me:
Nothing is more awkward than a miserable life.
Your own peace matters far more than anyone elses whims.
3) Guard what you say
With such people, dont share your private thoughts.
Dont reveal your plans.
Dont mention your happiness-in-waiting.
Some folks, when they hear good things coming your way, act like it pains them.
4) Limit your contactkeep things cool and distant
Theres no need to fight.
No need for explanations.
Just,
see less of them, dont stay long, keep it polite but chilly.
5) If you canhelp, but from afar
Sometimes, the person isnt wicked, just broken.
You might try to helpbut dont put yourself on the line.
My gran would say:
Save yourself first, then help others.
And most of all
If you feel someone is tearing you down
dont force yourself to put up with it.
No need to prove your kindness where its trampled.
No need to exhaust yourself for people who dont respect you.
If your heart clenches every time someones around
something isnt right.
And remember this, my dear girl:
The universe always gives us warnings. At first, it whispers. Then it shouts.
And if you still dont listen sooner or later, itll stop you in tears.
