Whispers Spread Through the School When Year 11 Student Anna Was Rumoured to Be Pregnant—Speculation…

Rumours floated around the corridors of the schoola strange haze that made everyones whispers sound muffled and distant. Teachers, with faces stretched and watery like rain on glass, spoke about the girl from Year 10 who was said to be with child. The gossamer threads of speculation tangled endlessly, passing from one chattering figure to the next, but Emily just drifted quietly through it all, saying nothing.

Emilys daughter arrived on a balmy midsummer night, when she was only fifteenher schoolbooks stacked dusty and forgotten in the corner. For five odd, hazy years, the fathers name hung in the air like an unspoken riddle. Emilys mother only learned of the pregnancy late, for Emily had always been sturdy, like the trunk of an old English oak. Growing worried by her daughters sudden, inexplicable increase in size, she swept her off to a friendly consultant in a grey-walled surgery in Surrey, where truth sprang up, sharp and definite, like a jack-in-the-box.

In shock and wrath, Emilys motherherself a lone island after years of raising her daughter soloblinked at the realisation that a tiny granddaughter now dwelled in their terraced home. Yet Emily never let slip the fathers identity, keeping her tongue as tightly sealed as the locked drawers in old British writing desks. The school, always hungry for drama, found the mystery delicious, but Emily walked steadfastly forward through the fog.

Summer brought the childs arrival, and Emilys mother took time away from her work at the local library to cradle and care for the new little one. Emily channelled herself into her studies, keeping her head down, and won a state scholarship to the university in town. While at university, she worked part-timestacking books in the evenings, or pouring tea in a bric-à-brac caféand a quiet trickle of extra money kept appearing, its source a mystery she would not reveal.

The years puddled past, the little girlimbued with wild curiosity and sparkling witgrew among the sleepy hum of rented flats and crumpled bus tickets. At three, she would sit in a tiny office corner, fingers tracing squiggles on scrap paper, while Emily balanced work, lectures, and the precise ballet of household ledgers.

When Emily finally donned her cap and gown, she stepped into a full-time role at the very company where shed once been just a face in the crowd. The summer her daughter turned six, Emily startled everyone by arriving home, dreamlike, arm-in-arm with a tall fellow named James, his eyes a shade of blue that somehow always blurred at the edges.

James: the man whose name had haunted the edges of conversation, now among them at last. For years hed supported Emily silently, shadowing them from afar while at the Royal Military Academy. In secret, hed slipped Emily neat brown envelopes and met his daughter on the stone benches of the city parks.

After finishing his officers commission, James asked Emily to marry him. She said yes as if the word had been lingering in her mouth for all of time. Soon, another childa sonjoined their odd, wonderful household. Their bright daughter, now at the cusp of leaving Year Three, gleamed at the heart of this gently surreal, fiercely loving family, their play echoing through old hallways as if the walls themselves dreamed along.
