6th February

I went to St. Georges Hospital today to finally bring home my wife and our newborn twin daughters, but all I found waiting for me were the girls and a handwritten note.

Unstoppable: today was supposed to be the day I brought my girls home!

I barely managed a hurried farewell to the nurses at the deskI could hardly wait to see Abigails face. But when I pushed open the door to her room, my heart nearly stopped.

The twins were sleeping peacefully in their cots, but Abigail she was gone. At first, I told myself she must have popped out for some air, but then I noticed a slip of paper on the bedside table. My hands trembled as I unfolded it:

Goodbye. Please look after them. Ask your mother WHY she did this to me.

Just then, a nurse entered holding some discharge papers.

Good morning, sir. Here are the forms for your daughters.

Wheres my wife? I cut in, my voice hoarse.

She hesitated, biting her lip.

She checked out earlier this morning. Said you already knew.

Where did she go? Did she say anything? Was she upset? I managed, thrusting the note towards her.

The nurse frowned, glancing at the note.

She was calm. Just very quiet. You mean you had no idea?

I walked out of the hospital in a daze, with the twins cradled in my arms and that crumpled note pressed to my palm.

Abigail had left. My wifethe woman I thought I understood inside outvanished without the slightest warning. All I had left were the girls, my broken dreams, and words as heavy as lead.

When I pulled up outside our home in Reading, Mum was already waiting on the doorstep, a casserole in her hands. Her face looked pinched with guilt.

Whats happened? she asked quietly.

I shoved the note at her.

This is whats happened! What did you say to Abigail?

She shrugged listlessly.

I dont know what youre talking about. Abigail was always just oversensitive. Maybe its the baby blues

Dont lie! I snapped. You never accepted her. You were always making sly digs at her.

I only wanted to help! Her voice broke, tears streaking down her cheeks. I never meant to hurt you

That night I replayed our family gatherings in my mindMums biting remarks about Abigail, her laughter covering up the hurt. I understood, at last, how much it must have stung.

Later, I found a letter addressed to Abigail, in Mums familiar handwriting. It read:

Abigail, youll never be good enough for my son. You trapped him with that pregnancy. If you really love them, leave before you ruin them completely.

It was nearly midnight, but I didnt care. I marched to the guest room and knocked until Mum answered.

How could you? I demanded.

I thought you were just interfering, but youve poisoned Abigail for years.

She grew pale reading the letter.

Listen, I

You wanted to protect me? In your eyes, she was never enough. Shes the mother of my children. You dont get to decide whos right for us. Thats it. Pack your things. Its time for you to leave.

The tears came faster.

You cant be serious

Deadly.

The weeks after that blurred into a nightmare.

One afternoon, as Ellie and Charlotte napped, a text landed on my phone from an unknown number. It was a photo: Abigail in the hospital, holding the girlsexhausted, but serene. The message read:

I want to be the mother they deserve. I hope one day youll forgive me.

I called back immediately, but there was no reply.

That evening, there was a knock at the door. I couldnt believe itAbigail was there, a small envelope in her hand, her eyes glistening with tears.

Im sorry, she whispered.

Shed left to protect us, to escape the cycle of pain and tension. With therapy, little by little, she was piecing herself back together.

I never wanted to leave. I just didnt know how to stay, she said.

I reached out and took her hand.

Well get through this. Together.

And we did. Healing is never easy, but against all odds, we made it.
