When Dad passed away, I found myself with hardly anyone to call. Aside from his closest neighbours, his second ex-wife arrived, now with a new family, and the most unexpected visitorsomeone Id nearly forgottenmy cousin Emily. We spent countless childhood days at Dads place together, but somewhere along the way, life pulled us apart.
Emilys journey was harsh. She fell into a toxic marriage, lost her child, defended herself against her husbands violence, and in the chaos injured him. He took her to court, and she ended up in prison. Her life seemed ruined, but news of Dad reached her by accident. Turns out she was working now, offered to pay for the funeral, as Dad had shown her kindness when she was young.
Those were dreadfully tough days for me. I didnt expect to see Emily again after the funeral, yet she started visiting more often. That summer, she helped me restore my small holiday cottage. In mere months, we bonded more closely than in all our years before. I learned she had a husband and a daughter, and eventually I got to know her family. Emily genuinely lifted my spirits. My own family seemed hopeless, but Emily managed to piece hers together despite her sombre history.
Were still in touch, sometimes the four of us go back to the cottage, other times I look after her little girl. Even so, I still find it hard to believe Emily was absent from my life for so long.
