Having chosen my wife over my children, I soon lost both.
Rebecca had been married twice, with a daughter from each marriage. Neither relationship lasted more than two years. She had two lovely little girls, aged two and four. Their fathers had no contact with them and offered no financial support. Rebecca always felt unlucky in love and believed happiness was out of reach. Her younger sister, Emily, was three years her junior, single, and childless. Emily enjoyed her freedom and dreamed of meeting the right man and starting a family, but her plans changed abruptly when Rebecca left her no choice.
Rebecca was impulsive and demanding, living a wild lifestyle that kept men from sticking around. She cared only for herself, ignoring everything else. Emily often helped with the girls, especially since Rebecca spent most of the past year searching for a new partner, convinced she needed one immediately.
Rebecca met Daniel at a café she frequented. She was instantly smitten. He was two years younger, just twenty-four, and worked as a software developer for an international firm. Their relationship blossomed; Daniel was attentive and showered her with expensive gifts. He soon suggested they move in together, but there was a catch. Rebecca hadnt mentioned her children, and Daniel had made it clear he wasnt ready for kids and didnt want any at that stage. Fearing shed lose him, Rebecca began considering what to do with her daughters. When Emily heard Rebecca wanted to abandon the girls, she insisted they stay with her. You can take them back whenever you want, Emily said, but Rebecca wanted Emily to become their legal guardian.
After much thought, Emily agreed, knowing the girls adored her and they got along well. She took on guardianship, though it was tough. Emily picked up extra work, sent the girls to nursery, and did freelance marketing from home. Eventually, Rebecca married Daniel, and five months later, they moved to England for his job contract. Life in London was comfortable, but back home, her daughters needed support, and Rebecca never gave them a thought. The girls grew up without seeing or hearing from their mother, always asking Emily where shed gone. In sixteen years, Rebecca never visited. The girls refused to even speak of her, considering Emily their true mum. Emily never married or had children of her own, dedicating herself entirely to the girls, who became her world.
Rebecca only returned to England after Daniel left her for a younger woman, ending their sixteen-year marriage. She didnt want to work and couldnt find another partner. She was left alone, and her daughters never forgave her or wanted anything to do with her.
Reflecting on all this, Ive learned that chasing fleeting happiness can cost you what truly matters. Family is irreplaceable, and neglecting those who love you most leads only to regret.
