Since my grandson was born, I never saw anything in him that reminded me of my son, Ben. But I kept quiet, believing that speaking out wouldnt make anyones life any better.
Im convinced my daughter-in-law never intended to admit anything and would have taken her secret to the grave, but Bens behaviour changed recently. He was always either at work or out with mates, hardly lifted a finger to help at home, and would ask for money from us and his wife.
She finally had enough, and during a row she confessed that the boy wasnt Bens biological son. She was already pregnant when they met. Everything happened so quickly between themwedding, and then the child was born. Ben never questioned the boys parentage, choosing to ignore any disparities. So much so, he didnt believe his wife and took the child for a DNA test.
When the results proved the truth, he packed his bags and moved back in with me and his dad. Hes utterly devastated, lost as to what to do with this new knowledge. And my advice to him is, Dont do anything!
Who really cares who the childs father is? Being a dad isnt about blood, its about loving, caring for, and bringing up a childand thats what Ben has been for the boy all these years, until he started favouring the company of mates above his family.
I cant blame my daughter-in-law for confessing in anger. I keep telling Ben to pull himself together and return home to his family. But how can you reason with a thirty-year-old? He now thinks his whole life was built on lies and refuses to accept the boy as his son in any way.
