So, get thisJames came home today much earlier than usual; it was only half past twelve on the clock. He stood there, just staring, not really understanding, while his wife was getting their sleepy little daughter dressed, and their son was standing right next to them.
Where are you going in the middle of the night? Why are you taking the kids? he asked.
Ive decided to leave you, I just cant take it anymore. Sarah looked her husband in the eye and thought back to how deeply she once loved him.
Well, if thats what you want, then off you go! James shouted, not even caring that he was frightening the children with his yelling. No one will want you with those kids. Idiot!
Well see about that, she said, and walked out the door with the children.
The first year of their marriage was honestly like a dream for Sarah. She practically glowed with happiness, being married to a good-looking, successful man who would do anything for her.
Well, love, with a man like that youre bound to get hurt, her mum occasionally warned her, but Sarah never paid much attention. Shed always reassure her parents that their family was strong because they truly loved each other.
One day, though, Sarahs world was shatteredshe found out James was seeing someone else. After their son was born, more problems started piling up, and that pain never really left her heart. For a while, she actually thought James had come to his senses, as things seemed to settle down at home. Quiet, calm, nothing out of the ordinaryexcept he was going on business trips more than ever. But Sarah kept telling herself they only lived so comfortably because of his work.
Then, after shed given birth to their daughter, the work trips started getting longer and more frequent. There was no point in asking James anything because his answer to every question was that she should focus on the kids and stop worrying about nonsense.
Sarah was pretty sure he was seeing someone else. She did her best to push those thoughts awayafter all, what could she actually do? Leaving him, with two kids, felt like absolute madness. She didnt confront him, even when she caught the scent of another womans perfume on him, or when she overheard his flirty conversations on the phone from the next room. But one day, she reached her limit.
Their tiny flat, barely enough money from her new jobit was all Sarah could manage, really. She was lucky the shop even hired her, since she had no real experience. She just went through the motions every day, because she had to. Any leftover energy she had was for her children; shed long forgotten about doing anything for herself. So when someone placed a beautiful bouquet at her till, she was genuinely thrown off.
This is for you. I just really want to see you smile. Maybe some flowers will cheer you up, even a little, said a man, probably around thirty-five, looking a bit sheepish.
He was a regular at their shop, always picking up the same thingssausages, ketchup, coffee, bread, and a pack of Cornish pasties.
Im Robert! Your shifts nearly over; let me walk you home.
It took a while before Sarah let herself even consider Roberts attention. She genuinely didnt believe a man would ever be interested in a woman with two kids. I mean, even their own dad hadnt called them once in a whole year. When her nerves finally snapped, she blurted out:
You know, Ive got two kids!
Perfect! he grinned. I was thinking of taking everyone to the zoo this weekend.
Sarah was gobsmacked. She couldnt quite believe a stranger would actually want to spend time with her and her children. But he didRobert taught her son to play draughts and helped her daughter learn to ski. He was the one who would get up in the middle of the night to run to the chemists if the kids were ill.
At one point, Sarah tried to end things with him, but he just laughed and said, Do you really think Id give up on such a wonderful opportunity? Will you marry me?
Sarahs been Roberts wife for over five years now. Theyve even got two more children together. Everyone, neighbours and friends alike, say that all the kids are the spitting image of him!
And you know, they really are starting to look so much like you. Maybe because you love them so much, she said.
Of course, darling, I love them all to bitsafter all, theyre a part of you!She looked at him, the way his eyes crinkled with every smile, and realized she was truly homemaybe for the first time ever. The childrens laughter echoed through the kitchen, blending with the sound of Roberts soft humming as he started on their favourite breakfast. For so long, Sarah had thought love was meant to hurt, to feel uncertain and anxious. Now, she understood: real love was gentle, inseparable from kindness, and steady as a heartbeat.
After breakfast, they all piled into the carfour kids squeezed into the back, giggling and bickering, Robert reaching over to give Sarahs hand a squeeze. In that simple touch she felt the quiet promise of every tomorrow. She turned to watch the sunlight flicker over the fields outside, and thought of the woman shed once beenthe one who was so afraid to be alone.
She wasnt afraid anymore.
As the road unspooled ahead of them, the future felt wide open, radiant and full of possibility. And for the first time in her life, Sarah smiled, not from hope or pretend, but because she was certain she and her family were exactly where they were meant to be.
