I’d Had a Long Day and Ordered a Pizza: Still Wearing a Thick White Face Mask, Half-Asleep in an Old…

After an endlessly long day, I decided to treat myself and ordered a pizza. While waiting for the delivery, I put on a face mask one of those thick, white ones that leaves you completely unrecognisable. My plan was simple: eat some delicious pizza, pamper my skin, and get an early night.

But the pizza took its sweet time. I lay down on my bed just for a moment as the telly murmured on in the background and promptly drifted off. Out like a light. There I was, face slathered in a chalky mask, hair flung up in a messy bun, wearing a battered old T-shirt.

The doorbell jolted me awake I shot up, still foggy and half-asleep, and without a second thought made straight for the door.

I opened it.

The poor delivery chap just stared at me, speechless, for what felt like a lifetime (but was perhaps two seconds). I stood before him, face bright white, eyes bleary, and with a thick, croaky voice asked:
What? What is it?

He was almost solemn, exceedingly polite, and simply handed me the pizza, managing only:
Good evening here you are.

I noticed something felt a bit off, but honestly, all I wanted right then was that pizza. I paid him, closed the door, and only when I caught my reflection in the mirror did I almost collapse with laughter.

Suddenly it made sense why hed looked at me that way. I washed my face, sat down with my food, and thought to myself, Poor bloke I must have given him quite the fright.

A week later, I was at a friends birthday do. Nothing grand, just a regular get-together. I was chatting away when some mutual mates arrived with a guy and introduced him:
Everyone, this is Tom.

The moment I saw him, I knew immediately.

Before I could stop myself I blurted out, laughing, Oh, I know you!

He looked puzzled and asked, Really? From where?

I grinned, Im the pizza girl you know, the one with the face mask.

He stared at me for a second and then burst out laughing as if hed just remembered the funniest thing in the world. Right then and there, he started recounting the story to everyone about turning up to the house, being greeted by a woman with a ghostly white face, wild hair, looking half-asleep and sounding terrifying and how he nearly dropped the pizza in shock.

We laughed about it for the rest of the party.

From that night, Tom and I started messaging. Everything between us has always been based on laughter, silly banter, and funny stories. Friends first, then a bit more. Our first year together was full of ridiculous moments, simple dates, and a lot of laughter. Its never been complicated or heavy.

Now, weve been married for three years.

And honestly, were exactly the same silly and a bit mad. Every time we show up at a gathering, someone inevitably asks us to tell the pizza story. And every time, we laugh as if its the very first telling.

Were not a drama or a tragedy. Our story has always been a comedy.
