We agreed to separate amicably with Julia, who knew I was planning to move abroad for work and alrea…

We decided to part ways with Julia by mutual agreement. She knew I was planning to move abroad for work, and she had already found someone new who caught her eye.

We had bought our flat together, but it was registered in Julias name, since her parents had paid for most of the renovations and wanted to protect their daughter. Eight years ago, I paid no mind to any of thatlove blinded me, stopping me from thinking about what might happen if our marriage ever fell apart.

While the paperwork was being handled, we both stayed in our old flat. Because of work, we barely saw each other at all. There was one moment when I thought maybe things werent completely lost between us, that there was still a chance. She prepared a lovely dinner, said kind words, and encouraged me about my upcoming move. That cunning fox played her part well, lulling me into a sense of false hope.

I had to fly to France for business, so I left everything in Julias hands. When I returned, someone else was living in our flat. To be exact, I was now the uninvited guest. In my absence, Julia had sold the flat in haste; she did not even wait for the divorce papers to be signed and vanished. There was no way to get in touch with her, and I suspect she had already left the country. I had a flight to catch soon myself. I hoped I would receive something from the sale, but now, I have no idea where to find her. Her new beau doesnt know where she is either; he claims they parted ways about a month ago. The police cant help me, because the flat was legally hers, and she had every right to do as she pleased.

But now, after all thats happened, I dont harbour anger. Instead, I recognise that lovewhen blinded by passion and unchecked trustcan lead us to make decisions without considering the future. Next time, Ill be wiser, valuing foresight and self-respect, knowing that sometimes lifes hardest lessons are the ones that teach us to put ourselves first.
