I remember a time, many years ago, when I spent nearly an hour at the bank with my father, as he needed to arrange a bank transfer. The wait grew tedious for me, and I finally said,
Dad, why dont you set up online banking?
He looked at me, a hint of surprise in his eyes, and replied,
And what would I want that for?
I hurried to explain,
Well, with online banking you wouldn’t have to spend all this time queuing at the branch. You could sort out everything from home transfers, bills, even shopping online. It’s so convenient and takes hardly any time!
My father regarded me quietly for a moment and then asked,
So, if I do this, I wont have to leave the house anymore?
Thats right! I answered, a bit too eagerly. You could even get your groceries delivered, straight to the front door. Everything comes to you.
But his response left me silent.
He spoke softly,
Today, since I walked into the bank, Ive greeted four friends and had a pleasant chat with Mrs. Parker, the cashier whos known me for years. You know I live alone sometimes this is the only conversation I get all day. I like rising early, having a shave, dressing smartly, and walking down to the bank. There’s time enough for it. Thats real contact, real life no screen can replace it.
He continued with reflection,
Two years ago, when I wasnt well, Mr. Harris from the greengrocers, where I always shop, came round just to keep me company. He even shed a tear with me. And when your mother twisted her ankle just the other day, the first person to help her was old Jack, who owns the little newsagent on the corner. He walked her home because he knows exactly where we live.
Do you think any of that would happen if everything was done online? Why would I want everything dropped at my doorstep, with only a computer for company?
I much prefer knowing the person Im buying from, not just staring at a screen showing seller. Its these simple things that bring real human connection. You wont find that in an online shop, my dear.
I had nothing to say in return.
He finished with a gentle smile,
Technology isnt life.
So spend time with people.
Not just with screens.
