I’ve Never Understood Why Children Can Be So Cruel – Innocent Kids Arrive at School Already Hardened…

I can never quite grasp where childhood cruelty comes from. Children arrive in this world innocent, and even though life toughens them bit by bit, how can they already be so callous by the time they start school?

Nearly all my life, Ive worked as an English teacher. Ive taught countless classes from Year 5 to Year 8, and Ive encountered many children. Some were delightful, others were genuine terrors, and some seemed to be perpetual victims. There are always those children who are completely defenseless; for some reason, the whole class gangs up on them, as though trying to chew them up and spit them out.

In one of my classes, there was a boy few warmed to from the start. William was an ordinary lad, pleasant enough in appearance but carried a little extra weight, which made him a target. First the children teased him for this, then mocked him for constantly asking questions both in lessons and during break times. He tried hard in his studies, though it didnt always go his way, and the constant taunting made him so embarrassed that he avoided the dinner hall altogether, instead choosing to eat at the staff table with me and other teachers.

Conversations with pupils at that age rarely lead anywherethey simply cant control themselves. Only years later did William find a bit of acceptance. In Year 8, when they realised their time together was ending, everyone seemed kinder; they focused on grades and exams, and a certain truce took hold in the classroom. Yet sometimes there were still those who bullied William. One of them was Abigail, who seemed to find fault with everyone. She once tore Williams coat and threatened him not to tell his parents. He didnt have toI told Abigails parents myself, demanded she apologise, and made her mend his coat.

After that, Abigail treated William even worse, although she hesitated to confront him directly.

Eventually, the pupils left for various secondary schools.

Years passed, but I stayed in touch with former students through social media. Not long ago, I stumbled across a wedding photo of William and Abigail. I was utterly stunned, looking at them surrounded by their old classmates.

It made me wonder what had happened. Abigail had never been fond of William, and he was always a bit wary of hernow here they were, husband and wife.

Life is unpredictable! Once, they were children who couldnt stand each other; later, life tossed everything upside down. Im delighted for them, yet still amazed. Today, I watch other pupils clashing in class, wondering if any will share such a fate, or whether William and Abigail are simply an exception.

It all goes to show: people change, and the relationships we form as children are not necessarily the ones we carry with us. Sometimes, forgiveness and understanding grow with age, and life surprises us in ways we never imagined.
